What to Expect from Bunion and Hammertoe Surgery

foot surgery

Bunion surgery is a very common procedure for the correction of bunions, during which an incision is made at the top of the big toe and bones are moved or realigned to the toe joint. Surgery for the treatment of bunions may be recommended if the overgrowths at the base of the toe are causing severe discomfort, and/or deformities. Depending on the severity of the condition, the affected toe or toes may need to be stabilized with the use of wires, plates, or screws. Recovery time for bunion surgery can take anywhere from six weeks to six months, and in some cases it could take a year to fully heal.

As with most types of foot surgery, expect to wear post operative shoes and protect the area of surgery. Always follow the guidelines given to you by your foot doctor to ensure proper recovery.

Hammertoe surgery is a procedure to correct crooked or misshapen joints in the toes. This can be caused by muscle imbalance which may be worsened by wearing ill-fitting shoes. As the toes are in a state of constant imbalance, this causes the toes to bend, and if not corrected immediately, may cause permanent damage. Hammertoes can be corrected with toe straighteners if caught early, however for more severe cases, surgery is often recommended. Usually only a small incision is made in order to straighten the deformed joints. You will be a little bruised and should have minimal pain during recovery. The recovery period usually lasts from about 7-10 days, but may be even shorter if you take proper notice of the doctors’ orders.
